Background

This position is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI), Policy and Operational Support Team (POST), within the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). OROLSI comprises the Police Division; the Justice and Corrections Service; the UN Mine Action Service; the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Section; and the Security Sector Reform Unit. Thematic areas under the remit of POST include the following, as they pertain to the OROLSI mandate: Prevention of Violent Extremism & Counter-Terrorism (PVE-CT); Sustaining Peace; Conflict Preventions; Youth, Peace and Security (YPS); Communications. https://peacekeeping.un.org/en/orolsi

The Political Affairs internship at the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for OROLSI is for an initial period of four months, with a possibility for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the Office. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Senior Political Affairs Officer, the Intern for Political Affairs will assist the Senior Officer on special projects:
•Monitor activities in relevant countries and regions, identifying trends and assessing emerging political and operational issues which may affect OROLSI activities
•Conduct research on thematic topics under the POST remit to inform OROLSI policy focal points on emergent matters toward the development of revising/developments policy and guidance materials
•Monitor and prepare summary reports on developments in inter-governmental fora pertaining to the PVE/CT; Sustaining Peace; and Youth, Peace and Security agendas for the perusal of OROLSI policy focal points and senior leadership
•Support the OROLSI focal point for the Youth, Peace and Security agenda ensuring OROLSI components are kept apprised of developments in inter-governmental fora and that OROLSI perspectives are integrated into various UN documentation
•Support the drafting of notes, background papers, talking points, presentations and speeches for senior UN officials as they pertain to OROLSI mandated activities and priorities
•Support the planning and implementation of meetings, events, policy review dialogues and training activities related to rule of law and security institutions
•Coordinate, collect and consolidate information/inputs from Offices on various reports and prepare submissions in accordance with standard UN practice
•Performs other related duties as required.

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Exposure related to in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area would be an asset.

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation; Field of study to be preferably in political science, history, international relations, law or a related field; Be computer literate in standard software applications; Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
